So I’m bored…

As is tradition, I wanted to start this blog out commenting on how I hope that I will start blogging more in the future…

Phew, now that that is over, let’s get down to business.

Alot has changed in my life since I last blogged. For instance, I am married, I have a college degree, I have a full time job, and I live in a new apartment. Before I said I would blog more about being engaged, obviously that did not happen. Let me sum it up… It was pretty awesome, but being married is cooler. Maybe some time I will talk about what it was like compared to what it is like now. Plus I’d like to talk about the wedding. Speaking of weddings, I’ve been doing wedding photography lately too. It’s a fun gig, when I am less lazy I’ll post some samples of my work – they’re pretty baller pictures.

I digress to what I was talking about before… which was nothing.

My aspirations to go to grad school have not sizzled out. I still very much want to. Right now I am trying to learn German and French on my own before I start applying. Hopefully when I have more time I can study for the GRE too so I can take that bad boy. As of now, working is pretty good.

What do I do you ask? WELL THANKS FOR ASKING. I work for a place called MARCO Promotional Products. I produce product videos and write for social media. Check out one of my latest videos right here.

Also as I had mentioned, I am married! I now share an apartment with Megan Thoman! It is pretty great, I really don’t have anything to complain about. Alot of people talk about how it is really hard to adjust to living with someone. Or I hear people say you really get to know someone after you marry them and have to live with them. I have found neither of those to be bad. She is still the same person and I didn’t find it hard to adjust at all – I don’t really think I needed too. There is so much I could go into about how awesome it is. That is for another time and place (and another blog category.

Cool bro. that’s enough blogging for now.
Check out my revamped personal website and my business website.

Also did I ever mention how I started a fan site for the game Ingress? Well I did, and I kind of lost interest in the game real fast, so it kind of died. But I bought the domain name, so maybe I will do something with that website later…
Keep an eye out.

That guy who writes this blog

I’m an Adult!

I feel like I should really rename my blog like “procrastinating from blogging” or something like that. Honestly, I feel like thats all I ever talk about. So the real question is, am I really too busy or am I just lazy…?

Instead of just talking about that though, let me just get right to it. Obviously, alot of things have probably changed since it has been like half a year. For starters, I am a college graduate now. Woo! I don’t have may paper yet though, so I’m not sure if that means I’m not really a real college graduate. Also, I have a real job now. I got a job with a business where I produce videos to market their products. Last but not least, I am getting married in one week!!!

So in a week I will be on my honeymoon with my amazing new wife. Then After that I will be back home in Oshkosh, then I will be moving into my new apartment in a couple weeks. Its like I am a real adult!!!

Anyways, thats all my life right now. Besides that, I have a few other things to talk about. For one, I have been watching the TV show Supernatural a ton. I also caught up with Breaking Bad. And I started watching Game of Thrones (I’m only to like episode 5 of this though). What I have been watching the most of is Supernatural – I’d say its a pretty awesome TV show. I am right at the end of season 5. I don’t like talking about TV shows too much though because I’m afraid to give away any spoilers. All you need to know is, you should watch this. Eric Kripke is pretty cool. Thats why I have to get caught up on Revolution too. I heard that Kripke left Supernatural i season 6 though, so I am not super excited to see what happens to the show then.

I don’t like blabbering that much. So I’m gonna cut it off about right now. I hope to write more, and soon I will have plenty to write about. I will soon be a married man!!! Only 7 more days!

A little teaser

I havn’t blogged in a while…
Because I have more important things to do, pretty much. Yeah, times is hard. I’m doing school and stuff, so its hard to find the time to blog. In the future though, I will have no excuses.

Why you ask?

First off, that was very kind of you to ask why and show genuine interest. Anyways, the reasoning is because I am graduating in like 5 weeks! Holy buckets! Now you are probably wondering why I am just writing this “teaser” thing then. The answer is simple. I realize I have not blogged in a long time, so I should. Also, I had a couple of seconds because I am waiting to play AOE. YES I KNOW!!! THEY RE-RELEASED IT!!! Age Of Empires 2 HD!!!! Yeah, I’ve been playing it – alot! And so right now I’m basically waiting for my friends to get out of a game on steam so that I can play with them. Seeing as that I had nothing else to do, I started blogging.

There you have it, a teaser. And by teaser I mean a really short blog post that really does not tease anything at all besides the fact that I might blog again some time soon.

Until next time,
thanks for reading.

I moved (…to a new domain)!

So, as many of you know (because I have so many readers and followers) I useto be If you are observant, than you will notice that I am actually now at is my online porfolio/personal website, so I decided to put my blog on my own domain. This is exciting for me, and for you! Because now I can add any widgets I want and any themes (I can even write my own widgets and layout!).

All in all, this is just a simple move. I figured if I was ever going to my my blog, I should do it now. Before I start blogging alot. So that way, by the time I start blogging alot and maybe a couple people are following my blog, they will not have to be confused by a domain move.

So for now on, look forward to this being my new url (, which is easy to remember because it is just my name. Also, hopefully look forward to more blog posts, since now I am not scared to post alot.

Kyle Kohl: A Great Man

Kohl, Thoman, and Walters at the phone bank

from left to right,
Chris Walters, Andy Thoman, Kyle Kohl

Kyle Kohl, otherwise known as the Gandhi of professional wrestling, is one of the most influential people who have ever existed. There are several reasons why one could argue that Kohl is perhaps the best person alive, but none as good as the argument that he is simply really handsome. That’s not it though, there is no end to the number of feats he has under his belt – his black belt.

Aside from being extremely attractive and being superb in the martial arts, Kohl has contributed to his community in his short two hundred and sixty-five months on this earth more than most have in a life time. At the age of sixteen, Kohl was the youngest person ever to receive the Noble Prize in Chemistry. He received his noble prize for his amazing advancements in sewage waste treatment. His research is estimated to have saved the lives of literally millions of people. Perhaps every single person has been affected by Kohl’s life because of this simple fact. Not only had that, before receiving his noble prize, Kohl achieved his Ph.D by the age of only thirteen. That is quicker than Doogie Howser was able to achieve his Doctorate of Medicine.  Kohl studied astrophysics for two years, until he decided to switch to Theoretical Chemistry Engineering and finished his dissertation in 2004. Overall, Kohl has proved himself to be a tremendous influence to the field of Chemistry in a whole, and has given back to the world through his selfless studies.

One would think that Kohl had achieved enough in life already. This was not true for him. Even at the age of eight, he had been in his local newspaper several times for such things as: saving babies from drowning, giving motivational speeches, raising huge amounts of money for numerous non-profits, and the list goes on forever. One aspect of Kohl’s life that is very notable is that of his high school career. Though he had already achieved multiple masters degrees and his Ph.D, he decided he wanted to live a normal teenage life. During his high school career, he was able to bring his football team to state as the quarterback and kicker, and win ten different national awards for forensics. During his involvement at Model UN at his school, many world leaders would attend their meetings to try to inquire of how Kohl operated in his decision making processes and how he interacted with others. Finally, after graduating high school he decided he would grace the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh by going for a four year degree.

While at UWO, Kohl has managed to blend in with the crowd by looking like an average college student. Appearances are deceiving though, because Kohl continues to be heavily involved: with the college radio station (WRST-FM), Film Society, Titan TV, and Residence Life. One of his previous residents, Joseph Peralta, said of him, “He is by far the best CA [Community Advisor] on campus.” Not only that, Kohl continues to hold up a 4.3 on a 4.0 grading scale. Kohl does not make the Dean’s list; it is the chancellor that makes the Kohl list.

Overall, there is no argument that Kyle Kohl may be one of the most influential persons to ever walk the face of the earth. There are so many ways that he has managed to help others around him, and even impact so many more people than he will ever understand. This one goes out to you, Kyle Kohl, Gandhi of Wrestling.

Last Semester of Undergraduate Studies

This is my last semester at UWO as a Radio/TV/Film student… well, that I know of (I guess I could fail a class or something). Anyways, I figured it has been a while since I have blogged about nothing. Alot of things obviously are quickly progressing in my life, so I have more to talk about, like the fact that I’m getting married this summer, I’m doing an internship, and I’m graduating this Spring.

So far so good this semester, I don’t have too much homework as of yet. And I think even though I have a bit of senioritis (or however you’d spell that) towards certain things, overall I’m pretty motivated where it matters – my work. I have been really good at not procrastinating on like anything this semester – and I mean anything. I have been getting my readings done, my homework done, yeah… I’m a straight up baller when it comes to school. I think one variable that really aids to this fact is I really enjoy the topics of my classes this semester: Religion and Television, Advertising for TV/Radio, New Media Theory and Practice, and Women and Religion are all interesting classes. Then I have a couple more on top of that; I need to finish my Spanish, because my degree is a Bachelor of Arts. I love learning Spanish, but I am so bad at it! Also I am taking outgoing career prep for RTF (radio/TV/film) students. And last but not least, I am taking Comprehensive Study Skills!

The last semester of my college life (until grad school) and I am taking Study Skills! Nice. Obviously this is because I needed one more credit to graduate, but its alright cause the class is easy. And who knows, maybe it will be beneficial in Grad School (probably not, because its all common sense). But speaking of that, I really need to get working on applying to grad schools. If you didn’t know, I really want to get my PhD in Theology. I am a bit lax as of right now though, because my fiance has a semester left of school, so I am going to take a year off from school and just work. But I need to get working on deciding what school I want; right now I have it narrowed down to like five schools: Chicago Divinity, Vanderbilt, Fuller, Yale, and Princeton. I did have a professor recommend to me Harvard the other day, I don’t know if would be up my alley, but I figure I should look into it anyone – who knows, maybe I’ll love it. To be honest, I’m not too invested in Yale, Princeton, or Harvard right now. But I’m not sure, maybe after more research in the schools I’ll change my mind.

All in all, life is moving fast. We’ll see where I go. For now, I am just taking it one step at a time, trying to enjoy it while I’m here.

Back to blogging and New Beginnings

So it has been a very long while since I have actually posted here… Basically, I made the excuse that it was finals week. Then I wanted to rest. Then I just kind of kept putting it off…

Sparks And Flames by Bobby Mikul

Anyways, I am back and hopefully will be more active now. I have decided to change up my format a little bit so that I will have the freedom to write more. I think one of the reasons I stopped posting is because I was trying to be consistent with my formatting and what not, so it made it much more work than fun. I want this blog to be more where I can just rant. So I have decided that my new blog posts will not have any real set consistencies except for a few categorical ones… Basically I am just going to try to give myself the freedom to write as much or as little as I want. Before I was always waiting until I had something to write a page amounts worth. The problem is when I had something I was too tired to write, by the time I wasn’t tired I had forgotten about it.

So, to catch you up on my life, I actually have much to talk about. This also relates to how I am going to change the way I run my blog. First off, I am engaged!

Andy and Megan showing off their new engagement.

Me and my beautiful Fiancé!

Over Christmas break I got engaged. This is one new component I am going to add to my blog. I am going to have a category all about my engagement, and hopefully into my marriage and forever. This will be fun because it will track my way of thinking and the changes in my life that I see specifically relevant because of my new soon-to-be married life. So if you want to read how I proposed and more about all that jazz, I will post that soon and place the link right here! Moreover, I am doing an internship now! I am interning in youth ministry at the Church I go to here in Oshkosh. So that will be a big change in my life and add a lot of excitement hopefully. This also is slightly related to my new category I am going to start writing about my theological ramblings. Sadly, since I am doing this internship, more is changing in my life. I will be stepping down from leadership in my InterVarsity chapter on my campus. The chapter is awesome! I just won’t have enough time to do both. In addition to all of those changes, this is my last semester (as long as I don’t fail any classes)! Meaning I will graduate soon and I will need a real job!

It’s like I am becoming a real adult all at once… I feel like I should pretend to be more mature or something along that matter.

Book And Glasses by Darren Lewis

Hopefully I will have a lot to blog about now, so I can keep this going. I will continue to ramble about random stuff here, I will start blogging about my engagement-marriage experience, and I will start to specifically blog about my theological/philosophical thoughts.Who knows, maybe I will even post more jokes in my joke section? All in all, that’s pretty much all the major changes in my life. Here’s to a happy new year and a revitalized blog!

I swear,  I will start proof reading these when I get less lazy!

Facebook Fights and Human Nature

So I posted a link to an interesting blog post on facebook today. It got quite the reactions. I was surprised by the immediate and emotional responses. Though I guess I should not had been too surprised. People like their politics. I encourage you to read through the blog post, it is a very good read. Moving on, the reason I was surprised by the responses was because they were not angry at the poster of the blog, it was almost like concern for me that I would read such things. Overall it was not much of a facebook discussion. I don’t do much on facebook, so it was more than my wall usually receives. Even though this instance was not a argument or anything of that sort, it reminded me of how humorous facebook debates are.

That is one thing I love about the newness of social networking, the stuff that people share is really quite surprising. I am surprised sometimes when people pour out their heart or bash some acquaintance of himself/herself. It is bound to be for a good throwback of witty sayings and sometimes misinterpreted quotes; its fantastic. My favorite is when the original post was about something that should hold no real importance, but people argue it like it is the end of the world to them (#first_world_problems). It makes sense to me though, modern society needs a new place for people to hold open debates. The only thing I don’t understand is why people still make such stupid remarks, because they can type it, think about it, revise it, and reread it before they ever have to post it. With all those capabilities, people still never cease to post really ignorant and arrogant remarks. I figure that is human nature, people like to be heard.

Human nature is a strange thing, because I don’t think there is an easy way to define it. I read an interview today, where the person being interviewed commented on how people use the terms “natural” and “unnatural” very loosely and often use them as synonyms of “good” and “bad.” I thought it was a very interesting thought. And it got me thinking about what human nature really is. I tend to be pessimistic , so I say humans are inherently evil – and that is why our world is so cruel. On the other hand, I have my moments of optimism. I feel like there are many examples of real altruism between humans, and real sacrificial love for others, it is just rare. I usually close my posts with a more closed thought than this, but to be honest I’m not sure I know what I think yet. I’d like to hear from others, please post and let me know what you think of human nature.

Flat tires and Dogma

Picture from Wikipedia

So today I made it to work miraculously after spending over an hour trying to change flat tire to a spare tire. After getting a flat tire, I assumed that I would be able to quickly change to my spare. But little did I know that the tire on there was being held on by a thousand demons – or something like that, I just assumed. Anyways, it was quiet an adventure, but I made it, walking into work 1 minute before my shift started. It’s a good thing that I planned to have some “ped” time for making it to work; hooray for planning! The reason I was so far away from work in the first place was because I was helping out at a youth outing with the youth group I help out at.

So this weekend the youth group I help out at is having a weekend conference. It has been very fun and rewarding so far, and I don’t think that is going to change. The weekend has been great to be able to see middle school and high school students have a fantastic time hanging out and chillin with each other. More importantly, it has been cool to see the students critically think about their lives. The conference theme is all about culture. It has been really awesome to see the students take it on themselves to think critically through questions about what they think about the culture and where they fit into it.

Famous Christian Anarchist - Leo Tolstoy

I enjoy seeing other people think through different theories, instead of just accepting what they are told. I am not big on pushing Dogma on others and forcing them to believe what I believe. I am the furthermost thing away from being a relativist though; I strongly think that there is a Truth and not multiple truths. The reason I believe it is wrong to want others just to think what I think is that that would be extremely arrogant. I do not claim to be the smartest person in the world, so I only offer what I have found out already and what I believe to be true. Don’t get me wrong, I am not easily tossed back and forth by different thoughts, I just don’t claim to be the all knowing God. The famous Christian anarchist, Leo Tolstoy, once said, “Dogmas – on which all men do not agree, which are of no use to anyone, which ruin men – are what the hierarchy has been giving out as faith” (Church and State).  I find this to be an interesting statement. Though I do not know if I entirely agree, I do think this Tolstoy’s statement holds some sort of truth. First, I think Dogmas are not inherently evil, I think they are valuable for an individual to have. I do not think that gives humans the right to kill or hate other humans in the name of dogma though. Moreover, I do think dogmas can harm people. I think like Tolstoy said, dogmas “ruin men,” can be very true. I think this is most true in the situations in which people allow dogma to block out logic or reason. Because though I believe there is real truth out there, people may not always have it right, so for a person to assume that he/she cannot be wrong, would harm that person by keeping them from truth. I think this rings true with how Tolstoy explains it as being given out as faith too, too often I think people assume what they know has to be correct and have all faith in something that they themselves came to the conclusion of. To put complete faith in your own idea is to claim that you are God because you are saying your idea cannot be wrong. All in all, this is just a brief statement about what I think about this topic. It was very quickly written too. That being said, I think it is worth further investigation and thought, so I will think it through more, and please leave comments on what your opinions are of dogma. Also, I really enjoy this topic, if you think I should do some blogs dedicated to talking about Church and about the State, leave comments and let me know.

Playing Games

I learned a new game today called “drug dealer” or something like that. This makes me wonder why I find certain games enjoyable and certain games boring. I had fun tonight playing games, but there are definitely times from the past where I have been bored playing games. It is odd that people are entertained by different things. What in the human mind determines whether something is pleasurable or not. It makes me think of when I was younger, how many hours upon hours I wasted playing video games. Why don’t people find productive things to be the most enjoyable? This thought reminds me of another concept that I often wonder about, can anyone be friends, or do friends have to be compatible.

Often times I have gotten into debates about what makes a friendship. I think it is very fair to think that anyone is a potential friend. On the other hand, there are certainly people who share interests that seem to be more compatible to be friends. This makes me wonder though, is this really friendship. If someone’s purpose of having a friend is solely pleasure, it is totally selfish. A friend should care about the other people, not only because they share interests, but because it is another human that he/she shares life with. If I were to define friendship, I would define it as “people who share life together.” I do not think that people need to be similar or even have common interests to share life; they just need to value each other. All in all, I think this topic requires a longer discourse than this here. Friendship is definitely a topic worth taking the time to think about, it is something I have thought about a lot after making so many new friends at school.

I have been in college for a while now. Most of my friends here, I have known for a while, but not as long as I have known my friends from back home. If I have learned one thing about friendship in school, I have learned it takes a lot of energy. I think it makes sense; you need to invest into people if you want some sort of return (i.e. a friendship). Since being here at school, I have met several people. It is an odd thing to be a part of different friend groups. My friends mean a lot to me, and all of them are unique in their own ways. One thing I need to continue to learn how to do; I need to learn how to be a better friend myself to repay the friends I have.
